Dr Ian Gauci, Partner and Head of the Communications, Media and Technology Department at GTG Advocates will be speaking at The Malta Institute of Accountants’ Anti-Money Laundering Conference on 20th February 2018.

The conference will focus on the recent legislative developments in Maltese AML legislation, what with the introduction of the 4th Anti-Money Laundering Directive into Maltese law, as well as a myriad of other related topics stemming from the subject.

Dr Gauci’s presentation will center around blockchain and the new paradigm it introduces for AML within the industry. With globalisation on the rise and an increase in the amount of financial transactions taking place at any given time, digitalisation has already proven problematic for AML compliance – Dr. Gauci will delve into whether the introduction of a decentralised element, as well as the possibility of anonymity and encryption have led to a decrease in the effectiveness of worldwide AML legislation.

The conference will be comprised of singular presentations as well as a panel session to discuss law enforcement within the sphere of AML. Other topics of interest will also be discussed, an overview of the recent local and foreign developments with regard to AML and the financing of terrorism, as well as Know Your Client (KYC) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) obligations as well as the implications of the GDPR on AML compliance.
