The Maltese Government has recently introduced a new residence scheme aimed at non-Maltese domiciled individuals working in the aviation industry.

The Qualifying Employment in Aviation Programme offers a favourable tax rate of 15% on the first €45,000 of employment income, including any period spent outside Malta in connection with work duties.

The scheme is applicable to those individuals holding a qualifying contract of employment as defined in the scheme and is available for a consecutive period of 5 years in the case of EEA and Swiss Nationals and a consecutive period of 4 years in the case of non-EU/EEA nationals.

Some of the positions which may considered as a “qualifying contact of employment” include: Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Technology Officer, General Manager, Flight Operations Manager, Training Manager Quality Systems Manager, Engineering Reporter, Aviation Systems Developer and Key Aviation Specialist.
