Credit Institutions

The acquisition of a licence in Malta offers a wide range of profitable activities from commercial and corporate banking to wealth management. As at 2014, there were a total of 27 credit institutions licensed in Malta.

Backed by Malta’s strong economic performance, a number of banking institutions have recognised Malta’s potential and set up a banking institution locally, serving both local and international clients. Subject to satisfying the relative criteria, the MFSA may issue a licenses for the following types of credit institutions:

  • Retail Banking
  • Corporate Banking
  • Private Banking
  • Business Banking
  • Investment Banking

In additional to traditional banking, banks in Malta may also carry out the following activities:

  • Financial leasing
  • Payment services
  • Issuing and administering means of payment (credit cards, travellers’ cheques and bankers’ drafts and similar instruments)
  • Guarantees and commitments
  • Trading for own account or for accounts of customers in:
    • Money market instruments
    • Foreign exchange
    • Financial futures and options
    • Exchange and interest-rate instruments
    • Transferable securities
  • Participation in securities issues and the provision of services related to such issues
  • Money broking
  • Portfolio management and advice
  • Safekeeping and administration of securities
  • Credit reference services
  • Safe custody services
  • Issuing electronic money
